Most people still think a doula is either a midwife, a hippie birth cheerleader, or someone who only supports home births. Wrong, wrong, and partially wearing linen.

You need to explain that doulas provide emotional, physical, and educational support, but do not replace the doctor or midwife.

Doula support is helpful for every type of birth — unmedicated, epidural, induction, hospital birth, birth center birth, VBAC, or planned cesarean. A doula helps you understand your options, stay grounded, and feel supported no matter how birth unfolds.

A doula does not replace your partner. She supports both of you. Many partners feel more confident when they have guidance on what to say, where to stand, how to help, and what mom may need in the moment.  Partner support is a major part of doula care.

Ideally in the second or early third trimester, but support can still be helpful later in pregnancy.

No. Your provider manages medical care. Your doula supports education, comfort, advocacy, and emotional grounding.
